Yelp makes it easy to find and support women-owned businesses

In celebration of last year’s International Women’s Day, Yelp announced the Women-Owned Business attribute alongside a partnership with Rebecca Minkoff and Female Founder Collective, to help people support female entrepreneurs in their local communities across the country. Since its launch in 2019, more than 72,000 businesses have added the feature to their Yelp pages.

Today, we’re celebrating Women’s History Month by making the attribute searchable, making it even easier to discover and support women-owned businesses.

We’ve seen a rising trend among reviewers mentioning if a company is female-owned. It’s up 20 percent since a year ago and 54 percent since five years ago. We understand that consumers want to champion women entrepreneurs  and know that their hard earned money is going into businesses they care about. In fact, we see that in looking at the average rating of all open U.S. businesses with at least 5 reviews, businesses marked as women-owned had higher average ratings than businesses marked as not women-owned. The effect holds true across just about every category of business on Yelp.

To celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8th and Women’s History Month this March, we’ve highlighted 100 standout female entrepreneurs on Yelp and we’ll be sharing their stories on our social handles. These are all businesses that have activated the women-owned business attribute on their page. All female business owners can login to their Yelp business owner dashboard to activate the attribute. If you’re a woman-owned business and would like to receive a window decal to proudly display on your storefront, please fill out this form to receive one. Learn more here.

Since 2004, Yelp has connected millions of people to great local businesses. In that time, we’ve met thousands of passionate small business owners and we’re excited to share the stories behind these women-helmed businesses with you on Instagram @Yelp! Follow the conversation at #WomenOwnedOnYelp.

Methodology: This is a list of the top women-owned businesses in the United States, according to Yelp. We identified businesses marked as women-owned, then ranked them using the number of reviews and average rating. We included a maximum of two businesses per state for geographic diversity.
