Biography of Pierre CARLES

Pierre Carles, born April 2, 1962, is a French director and documentary maker.

Pierre Carles obtained a diploma from the IUT Carrières sociale de Gradignan then a diploma as a journalist-reporter of images from the IUT de journalism de Bordeaux in 1988. He began working at Télé Lyon Métropole but was quickly dismissed for serious misconduct in because of his impertinence.

He then worked on television for Bernard Rapp in his show L'Assiette Anglaise on Antenne 2 or in the show Tranche de Cake. From 1990, he also worked for Christophe Dechavanne in his show Ciel mon Mardi on TF11 or for Thierry Ardisson.

In 1992, Pierre Carles became known for a report on the false interview with Fidel Castro by Patrick Poivre d'Arvor and Régis Faucon. He thus proves through images an imposture denounced by Télérama on January 1, 1992. His report, initially scheduled for Saturday January 18 in the program Double Jeu by Thierry Ardisson, was canceled at the request of the president of Antenne 2 Hervé Bourges , then finally aired a week later, on January 25, 1992.

Pierre Carles also works for the show Strip-tease, for which he notably directed the documentary Pizza Americana which will be reused in Attention danger travail or the portrait of Jacques Chirac's driver Chirac, my wife and me. In January 1996, the report Chirac, my wife and me, which had been broadcast in 1994 before Chirac was President of the Republic, was canceled from France 3. The report was finally rebroadcast in 1997.

In 1995, Pierre Carles made a documentary for Canal+ entitled Not seen on TV in which he interviewed a certain number of television personalities and asked them why they were never interested in the collusion between journalists and political figures. He takes in particular the example of a video showing great complicity between François Léotard and Etienne Mougeotte. The personalities interviewed by Pierre Carles denounce his method and declare that they feel trapped. His report was finally canceled by Canal Plus. The document was awarded the 10th Angers scoop festival in November 1995 and was finally broadcast on Belgian television RTBF on May 5, 1996. On the other hand, Daniel Mermet who had considered broadcasting the report on his radio show on France Inter could not broadcast it.

Pierre Carles, who recorded his telephone conversations with those responsible for Canal Plus, made a film which he entitled Pas vu, pas pris and in which he shows how his report Pas vu on TV was canceled from the air. The film was finally released in cinemas in November 1998. It attracted 160,000 admissions.

In 1999, he made a documentary with Philippe Lespinasse on the Passes of the Arcachon basin, entitled Le Tour des passes and broadcast on France 3 Ouest.

Pierre Carles then made a film on the sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, Sociology is a combat sport.

With Finally taken?, he continues his work on media criticism, this time attacking Daniel Schneidermann who also claims to criticize the media on television with his weekly program Arrêt sur images broadcast on France 5. Pierre Carles, who worked with Schneidermann at the start of his career, intends to show that the latter has turned around and that he has also become reverential towards the powerful, as evidenced in particular by a complacent interview with Jean-Marie Messier.

Pierre Carles makes an appearance in the film Aaltra (2004) by Benoît Delépine and Gustave Kervern, playing a cynical surgeon.

With Christophe Coello and Stéphane Goxe, he abandoned media criticism for a while to focus on the world of work. Together, they made the film Attention danger at work. In this film, they meet people who have chosen to leave or stay outside the world of work. Their testimonies are compared to images from the documentary Pizza Americana on the world of work and are compared to the speeches of politicians or big bosses interviewed at the Medef summer school. With Volem rien foutre al païs released in March 2007, the directors set out in search of people rejecting salaried work and seeking to live independently.

He then made a film with Éric Martin about Professor Choron entitled Choron, Derniere. The film is also an indictment against the new Charlie Hebdo team led by Philippe Val. In the film, Cavanna denounces in particular the ?repressed audacity? of the weekly?s collaborators. Cabu, Philippe Val and Wolinski are filing a complaint against the film's two production companies, 3B and Tadrart Films, for using their names on the film's poster without their consent.

In 2006, with Georges Minangoy, he directed a documentary film on Direct Action, Neither old nor traitors.

During the socialist presidential primary of 2006, Pierre Carles broadcast on the associative television Zaléa TV a new sequence of rushes from Sociology is a combat sport in which Pierre Bourdieu explains that Ségolène Royal, although she is in the socialist party, is according to him someone from the right. The video posted online has met with some success.

Pierre Carles returns to media criticism with Fin de concession (2010) in which he questions the renewal of the concession for the first French national channel (TF1) granted to the Bouygues group since 1987. He attempts to use the method that he had developed in Pas vu, pas pris and seeks to trap television personalities by asking them why no one on television ever investigates this subject, but the recipe no longer works. The main character of the film, fictional double of Pierre Carles, then questions the meaning of his action and takes stock of twenty years of criticism of the dominant media.

On the occasion of the 2012 French presidential election, he produced a documentary with Aurore Van Opstal and Julien Brygo entitled Hollande, DSK, etc... on the way in which the press successively supported the candidacies of Dominique Strauss-Kahn and Francois Hollande. This documentary continues the work begun in 1995 with Juppé necessarily in which Pierre Carles showed how Alain Juppé's candidacy for mayor of Bordeaux had been supported by the local press. It notably gave rise to a controversy with Jean-Michel Aphatie who felt trapped by Julien Brygo, who posed as a Belgian journalist from RTBF to obtain an interview with him. A version of the film was put online on Pierre Carles' personal website on April 19, 2012, three days before the first round of the election. The final version was sent by DVD during the month of December 2012 and is available online for free.
