Pepsodent brushes people the wrong way

The subject of attractiveness is one of personal opinion. This also carries over to culture, as what is considered attractive in one culture may not be considered in another culture. This ties in to the next foreign faux-pa, that of certain parts of Asia and white teeth

Pepsodent toothpaste has a slogan that claims “You’ll wonder where the yellow went / when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent!” This didn’t carry over well to the South East Asian markets they tried to appeal to, since in these areas locals find dark or black teeth attractive. People living in these areas even chew betel nuts to blacken their teeth. This led to Pepsodent eventually pulling their product out of this market.

This instance was interesting because this was more of a problem based on colors caused by the product, rather than the color of the product or the color of advertising pieces. The choice to pull out of this market rather than change the brand seemed weird to me as well. I thought simply adding food coloring to change the color of the product would be enough, as well as changing the slogan to imply that it made your teeth black. The fact that they were trying to sell tooth paste to a market that doesn’t like white teeth might be the main problem though.
