The history of lolita fashion may have originated in Japan back in the 80s but fast forward to today lolita fashion has become a global phenomenon. But within the lolita community, there still persists a barrier to black women who wish to participate in the fashion. February is Black History month so as a lolita who wears the fashion on a regular basis I decided to put a cute spin on celebrating this iconic month and list my favorite black lolitas who are killing the EGL game with so much sass and style. To show that black lolitas exist and we are here to stay! -

#1: EBONY

Ebony is a black j-fashion icon who currently lives in Japan. Defying all stereotypes of what it means to be a black woman in society; her Instagram is filled with photos of her wearing feminine fashion from Liz Lisa to Angelic Pretty. she was recently featured in a Japan Times article (https://www.japantimes.co.jp/community/2019/08/21/issues/meet-women-reframing-black-femininity-japanese-spaces/#.XjsIlxNKgcg) showing how black women are reframing what is considered feminine. First Frill Impressions

Getting the chance to work with Iris was absolutely a dream. The first time I encountered lolita, I was in awe. I had never seen such beautiful dresses adorned in pure elegance before; I had only imagined it. As an avid but recovering addict of historical romances, I thought the rococo dresses would just be on the pages. The moment I saw lolita in person I too thought of them as “doll-like princesses” but quickly grew to recognize the strength and ambition that lolitas have in the world. Honestly, they are a community to contend with; I’ve met some fantastic members of the community. Seeing the growth of the lolita community has been one of the many Jfashion pleasures I am blessed to witness. While I’m not a participating member of the lolita community, I admire their fashion immensely.

The world needs to see more black lolitas represented. I mean, look at the unity of style and culture. One of my favorite aspects of black lolitas is the creativity of elegance woven with our hair. There are many people who need to see that we uphold elegance and intricacy like this. I hope that this post inspires you to follow some cute black lolitas and fall in love with Black Jfashion the way that I have. This is a testament to alternative black fashionistas all over the world. Trust me when I say the moment you sit down with a black lolita and chat your world will open up to a vast hidden world. However, that’s a story for another time, and maybe next time I seek out Black Jfashion, I’ll see you and applaud your coord.
