Abstract

Availability: Roman snails (Helix pomatia) like places which are dark and damp. In spring and autumn, they are most active and easy to collect. When it’s dry or cold, they seal themselves up; they hibernate in winter and aestivate in summer. During these periods giant Ghana snail (Achatina sp.) can be purchased from zoos instead. Different species of snails differ slightly internally. The instructions given here should enable the student to dissect any type of snail. Examine the snail alive and watch it crawl. Place it on a sheet of glass, watch it from the other side and observe foot muscle contraction waves. Study the external appearance, noticing especially the head, tentacles, collar and opening of mantle (Figs. 5.1 and 5.2).
