Requiem For A Dream to this day has been one of the movies that have left their scenes recorded in my head for a long time given that at some point the acting got you accompanied by the main theme "Lux Aeterna", and comes to disgust how everything comes down.

Requiem For A Dream by Darren Aronofski

Requiem for a Dream is an american drama film directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly and Marlon Wayans. The film is based on the homonymous novel by Hubert Selby, Jr., with whom Aronofsky wrote the script.

The film shows four different forms of drug addiction, leading to the imprisonment of the characters in a world of illusion and reckless despair that is later overcome by reality, leaving them as empty shells of their former selves.

The film is divided into three stations that will contain stages of addiction:

Summer: With the regular consumption of the substance.

Autumn: With dependence on the substance.

Winter: With abuse and abstinence caused by the substance.

Summer

The movie will begin with Harry Goldfarb taking his mother's television, Sara Goldfarb. Harry pays the TV often to buy drugs, but Sara always retrieves the television.

Sara is a lonely person, spends most of her time watching television. For Sara the television becomes an addiction after the death of her husband, one day she receives a call from the show she sees every day, Sara is selected to appear in the program. Given the situation Sara wants to go as well as possible to the show so she decides wear the red dress she used at her son's graduation but it does not fit, from this point Sara becomes obsessed with losing weight in order to wear the dress.

Sara begins a diet to lose weight but can not control her anxiety about sugar and other things she ate during the day. When she can not stop thinking about food, she goes to the office of a dubious doctor who prescribes pills to lose weight and stops having anxiety, but what she does not know is that the pills are amphetamines.

So Sara taking the pills feels relieved and can enjoy watching television without her anxiety interrupting her. One day Harry visits his mother and notes that he is different, in a state of euphoria, so he warns his mother that the pills are amphetamines and that she stops taking them because she will become dependent. Sara will continue taking amphetamines because her only goal is to lose weight and wear the red dress.

On the other side Harry and Tyrone become dealers, they cut the drug and resell it obtaining good profits, Harry and his girlfriend Marion with the money of the drugs plan in opening a store where Marion will sell her clothing designs. The three will have access to more expensive and powerful drugs.

Autumn

Sara becomes more dependent on amphetamines and develops tolerance, so increase the dose by abusing them. By increasing the dose she feel much better and begins to hallucinate with the show she always watch.

Tyrone meets with his drug provider but is set up by the police, Tyrone is imprisoned. Harry and Marion pay Tyrone's bail with their drug savings. As time passes, the business becomes more difficult, Harry and Marion present difficulties in their relationship due to consumption, they have become dependent and tolerant but they can not satisfy their addiction.

Harry and Tyrone find out about a drug shipment that arrives in the city, but being in the place some guy shoot and they do not obtain anything, from this point Marion begins to suffer abstinence.

Sara becomes more dependent on amphetamines and doubles the dose again suffering from stronger hallucinations where in the show she frequents, they mock her state, she also hallucinates with her refrigerator moving and coming alive. From here Sara loses her sanity and goes to the studio of the show.

Winter

Harry and Tyrone travel to Florida but on the way Tyrone realizes that Harry has a gangrenous injury to his arm caused by heroin injections so they decide to go to a hospital to be checked. At the hospital, Harry can not stand the pain in his arm and the doctor who treats him calls the police because he knows his state of addiction.

Marion in a state of abstinence begins to prostitute herself in exchange for drugs to satisfy herself sinking much more.

Sara arrives at the studio asking for the presenter, the employees call security and she is taken to a psychiatric hospital.

Everything ends with the characters falling and losing everything, Harry's arm is amputated because of gangrene, Tyrone is imprisoned and suffers the bad treatment of the guards day by day, Sara is completely interned in the psychiatric losing the sanity completely and Marion continues to prostitute herself to satisfy her addiction. Thus the film tragically ends with the lives of the characters destroyed because of their addiction.
