  • HISTORICAL SUMMARY  

The Irish Red Setter was developed in Ireland as a working hunting dog. The breed is derived from the Irish Red and White Setter and an unknown solid red colored dog. It was a clearly identifiable type in the 18th century.  The Irish Red Setter has evolved over the years to become a robust, healthy and intelligent dog, possessing excellent working skills and a lot of stamina.

Country of Origin: Ireland.

BEHAVIOR AND TEMPERAMENT:  It has a balanced temperament, very  intelligent, very energetic, with a high level of loyalty.

HEAD:

  • CRANIAL REGION  
     

Skull: Oval shape.
 

Stop : Well defined.
 

  • FACIAL REGION

 

Snout:  Moderately deep and a little  square at the tip of the truffle. From the stop to the tip of the truffle, long.
 

Truffle:  Dark mahogany, dark hazelnut or black.

Jaws and Teeth:  Scissor bite, strong jaws of equal length.
 

Lips: Well developed. and adjusted.

 

Expression: Intelligent and alert.

Eyes: Hazel or brown.
 

Ears : Medium, fine textured, set low and well back, hanging.
 

NECK :  Long, arched and muscular neck. Free from dewlap.
 

  • TRUNK
     

Top Row: Level.
 

Back: Well developed.

TAIL: Of moderate length, proportionate to the size of the dog, set rather low, strong at the root, tapering to the tip. Carried level with the back or below.

Shoulders: Thin at the tip, deep and sloping back.

Elbows: Turning neither in nor out.
 

Feet: Small and firm.

Hocks: Turning neither in nor out.

  Well developed.

Paws :  Small and firm.

  • GAIT/GAME: Free, flowing with drive, head carried high. Forelegs of good reach but carried low. Smooth propulsion rear with great power.  
     

  • COAT

Hair : On the head, on the front of the legs and at the base of the ears, short and fine; on the other parts of the trunk and limbs of medium length, flat and without possibility of being wavy or curly. The fringes at the top of the ears are long and silky; on the back of the fore and hind legs the hair is long and fine; the belly is well feathered, forming fringes that can extend to the chest and throat. Feet well feathered between the toes. Tail with moderately long fringes, decreasing in length as it approaches the tip. All bangs are straight and flat.

  • COLOR: Red and brown.
     

SIZE: Females - 55  to 62  cm/Males - 58  to 67  cm

  • FAULTS  

Any deviation from this standard should be considered a fault and penalized in exact proportion to its severity and its effects on the health and well being of the dog.  

DISQUALIFYING FAULTS

 

• Aggressiveness or excessive shyness.

• Any dog that shows any sign of physical or behavioral anomaly must be disqualified.

• Atypical dogs.
