Crank 4K Blu-ray SteelBook Edition
Posted March 28, 2023 05:16 PM by
Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release 4K Blu-ray SteelBook Edition of Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor's action thriller Crank (2006), starring Jason Statham, Amy Smart, Jose Pablo Cantillo, Efren Ramirez, and Dwight Yoakam. The release will be available for purchase on May 23.
There are a thousand ways to raise your adrenaline, and today hit man Chev Chelios (Jason
Statham) will need every one! He has one hour to settle the score and say good-bye to his girl
and go out with a little style! The only question is, will he stay alive long enough to see it
happen?
Special Features:
Considering the movie is one of the early digital shot HD movies with a Sony CineAlta camerea in 1080p, I don't think a 4K release is warranted. There's no wcg or higher dynamic range to be extracted from this old digital source. This looks like a rather revisionized product. I'd rather they release a 1080p Blu-Ray (1-1 pixelmapping) of the extended version which came out in Germany instead.
(oooh, I just rememebered: Lionsgate allready released this in 4K a couple of years ago! :O .... where they scanned a 35mm print instead of using the original digital source film. It's still in print so I see little point in this re-release.)
Also, going off kishiro's comment, is this "upscaled 4K" because it was shot digitally at 2K and sub-2K, or is it "native 4K" because they then scanned and restored a 35mm print at 4K resolution? This might wind up being the first upscaled 4K in my collection.
This looks fantastic! But are Best Buy exclusives released outside of the US as well? So far there's The Man Who Fell To Earth that has an exclusive artwork steelbook that I don't see being releases elsewhere, and now this too. It would be a real shame if really only Yanks can buy this, darnit.
Waste of time to continue insulting North America consumers by re-releasing the already available theatrical version, when Germany already released the extended cut last year. No thank you
AFAIK given the nature of filming this I am not sure a 4K brings much to the table. Will wait for reviews, but could be tempted to upgrade. This is an OUTRAGEOUSLY fun watch.
