2015 Volkswagen Scirocco GTS (Euro-spec)View Photos

Volkswagen’s Scirocco, the Golf-based sports coupe once so popular in the States, has been denied to U.S. buyers for the entirety of the third-generation model’s life span. That sad situation remains even as VW adds a sporty new GTS trim level for the European market and for China. Let’s torture ourselves with a closer look, shall we?

The GTS is based on the 217-hp 2.0-liter TSI, which puts the model one notch below the 276-hp Scirocco R (we enjoyed testing a 261-hp R in 2013). The turbo four also makes 258 lb-ft of torque and can be paired with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG. VW claims 6.5 seconds for the sprint from zero to 62 mph, on the way to a top speed of 153 mph (subtract 1 mph for the DSG).

The GTS gets VW’s R-Line exterior-trim package consisting of a unique front bumper with integrated fog lamps, side sill extensions, a roof-mounted rear spoiler, and a rear diffuser. The GTS rolls on 18-inch Norwich wheels, with 19-inch Lugano wheels optional. Available stripes that run along the hood, roof, and rear hatch are supposed to recall a similar treatment on the early-’80s Scirocco GTS. The stripes are black if you order the Flash Red exterior; they’re red with the other five colors: Deep Black, Indium Grey, Urano Grey, Pure White, and Oryx White. All come with black side mirrors.

Inside, the black-and-red theme continues, with a black headliner, gloss-black trim, and contrasting red stitching on various cabin bits. An uplevel infotainment system and the “legendary” golf-ball shifter are also included.

The GTS arrives in Europe next month and shortly thereafter in China (the site of its introduction). The longer-term prospects for the Scirocco, though, are unclear. There has been talk that VW is taking a hard look at its two-door niche models, which could jeopardize a fourth generation of the Scirocco—although at least it wouldn’t torment U.S. VW fans from afar.
