5 ways to dress like David Gandy

Whether he's repping Savile Row in a suit and waistcoat on the front row at the shows or throwing on a leather jacket over some superb cashmere knitwear for his downtime, there are few men on the London scene who rival the consistent style skill of model David Gandy.

And it's been a rapid rise to fame. His breakout 2007 TV advert as the face (and gym guilt-inducing body) of Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue racked up an impressive 11 million hits online, a 50-foot billboard in Times Square and saw the Billericay native rocket from a catwalk unknown to the most famous six-pack in Britain (and arguably the world).

Since then Gandy has fronted campaigns with Lucky Brand Jeans, Jaguar F-Type, Johnnie Walker Blue Label and Marks & Spencer, not to mention launching his own M&S underwear line in 2014. Not bad for a guy who was discovered by Richard and Judy on This Morning.

His style off the catwalk is anchored by his impressive selection of slick suits, which are often mixed-up with curveball casual pieces - a belted cardigan here, a V-neck T-shirt there - and pulled together with an impeccable array of gentlemen's accessories. On the red carpet, he is one of the few men who gets ultra-traditional black tie spot-on, but who's also not averse to remixing it with velvet dinner jackets and waistcoats. In short, he's the kind of guy who looks like the archetypal leading man - and he's not even in the movies.

Want to know how to steal David Gandy's imitable style? We break down how he does it below (and scroll down for a gallery of every single suit he's worn recently...).

The mixed-up three-piece suit

While it looks effortless when the Gandyman does it, this look requires much more thought than just pairing random items from your wardrobe. The key is in the tones and the materials - a basic rule is keep all the materials the same (tweeds with tweed, cottons with cotton) and that a bolder colour should be paired-up with more neutral shades of grey or beige.

Bring hats back

**

** Forget baseball caps: when it comes to accessories, Gandy's go-to is either a traditional British flat cap or felt trilby. While they look great with a suit, what you'll find is that both are also incredibly versatile on your downtime too - especially if you wear one, cocked at the appropriate angle, with a denim jacket or thigh-skimming overcoat.

The gentleman's leather jacket

**

** Rather than thinking of it as something to throw on if you head to a gig, treat your leather jacket as an extra blazer at your disposal. Whether you're more of a cropped biker or belted motorcycle jacket kind of man, ensure you go for a fit that hits exactly on the shoulders and hugs your body - then you can wear it either as a top layer or under another layer.

Break out the brown

**

** Gandy is a big fan of brown shoes, especially brogues and Derbies. However what's important to note is the shade he goes for - a dark tan, which will match up just as well with your navy or grey suits as it will with your best selvedge on the weekend.

Tuck in your T-shirt

**

** OK, so this is one for those of us with less than ten per cent body fat, but if you have a flat stomach, tuck that T-shirt when you're wearing it with tailoring. That way it will look just as smart as a freshly-pressed white shirt.
