You may think of a white vest as the most basic item in your wardrobe (and, to be honest, you wouldn't be wrong), but we're here to tell you that right now it's a must-have companion to your next formal event. Kim Jones hammered the dipping neckline, sleeveless structured piece across a lot of his Spring/Summer 2019 collection, triggering the coolest men, such as Harry Styles, to quickly sport the style. The latest advocate? Mr David Gandy, who proved the power of the combination yesterday at London Fashion Week Men's.

Rocking up to the Belstaff SS20 presentation, Gandy chose to style a simple white vest (of his own design, available from his Autograph range at Marks & Spencer) underneath a sage cord suit. Slotting between his sharp peak lapels, the vest brought a solid amount of casualness to an otherwise formal look and it was a pretty apt choice for this event in particular. We all know that Belstaff's colour palette is khaki dominated and yesterday creative director Sean Lehnhardt-Moore stuck to those earthy tones, revealing riding jackets, bombers, grandad shirts, straight-cut white jeans and a finish of fishnet scarves.

So what did he style around it? For footwear: suede penny loafers. For accessories: silver aviator shades. All in all, a pretty strong outfit for transitioning from day to eveningwear and we couldn't be more for it. Summer's on its way, so we suggest that if you sport one look this upcoming season, take a tip from Gandy's book. Easy, timeless and just plain cool all at once, it's a charming combination that communicates both elegance and style. Truth be told, though, what else would you expect from a man who frequently proves he's mastered both? Our only additional piece of advice: maybe have one of those Belstaff fishnet scarves to hand too – the forecast can be a bit unpredictable sometimes.
