This Mercury Comet got away, but there are more like it here.

This 1962 Mercury Comet is powered by a replacement inline-six and C4 automatic transmission sourced from a contemporary Mustang, and is finished in Sultana White over a two-tone red and white interior. The seller found the car in a barn in Northern California, and subsequently had it shipped to San Diego where it was refreshed, the driveline replaced, and the car returned to roadworthy condition. This 4-door Comet is now offered at no reserve with a vintage roof rack and a clean California title in the seller’s name.

No Reserve: 1962 Mercury Comet Custom

The exterior is finished in Sultana White and retains factory brightwork and lighting. Wear is visible in the paintwork around the rear fins, wheel arches, and door sills. 1962 was the Comet’s first year badged as a Mercury model, and the rear quarters, taillight panel, and trunk lid were restyled to more closely resemble the rest of the Mercury lineup.

Steel wheels are fitted with factory wheel covers and newer tires. A vintage “Aloha” rain-gutter mounted roof rack is installed.

No Reserve: 1962 Mercury Comet Custom

The interior is trimmed in two-tone red and white vinyl with matching carpets. The car retains a factory steering wheel and stereo. The seller notes that the indicator for the automatic transmission selector is not correctly aligned following the transmission swap.

No Reserve: 1962 Mercury Comet Custom

Factory instrumentation has been retained, including a 100 mph bar-style speedometer. Just under 39k miles are shown, approximately 1k of which were added by the seller.

No Reserve: 1962 Mercury Comet Custom

The original engine and transmission were replaced with a 200ci inline-six and a C4 three-speed automatic from a contemporary Mustang during the seller’s ownership.

A start-up and walk-around video is viewable above.

No Reserve: 1962 Mercury Comet Custom

The rear end was also reportedly sourced from a Mustang. Additional photos of the underside are provided, and show the floors, rockers, suspension components, and more. A driving video is viewable below.
